Dutch iGEM Meet 2026: Connecting Future Synthetic Biologists
The Centre for Living Technologies (CLT) proudly hosted the Dutch iGEM Meet 2026 on July 3, 2026 at Utrecht University bringing together iGEM teams from universities across the Netherlands and Belgium for a day dedicated to learning, discussion and community building.
Held midway through the iGEM season, the Dutch iGEM Meet provides students with an opportunity to connect with fellow teams, present their project ideas in an informal setting, receive constructive feedback and build relationships within the Dutch synthetic biology community. As many teams are still shaping their projects at this stage, the event offers a valuable platform to exchange ideas, discuss challenges and learn from one another before the busy months of research ahead.
Starting the Journey Together
The meeting opened with presentations from the participating iGEM teams, who introduced the scientific questions they aim to address and the approaches they plan to explore. The presentations sparked lively discussions, allowing students to ask questions, share perspectives and provide suggestions that can help strengthen each other’s projects.
Rather than focusing on evaluation, the atmosphere encouraged openness and collaboration. Students were able to discuss ideas freely, learn from different approaches and gain inspiration from projects across a broad range of synthetic biology applications.
Expert Talks: Looking Beyond the Laboratory
A highlight of the Dutch iGEM Meet 2026 was two engaging keynote talks that encouraged students to think beyond the scientific aspects of their projects and reflect on the broader impact of their work.
Amalia Kallergi, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute for Science in Society, Radboud University, delivered a thought-provoking talk on “Synthetic Biology: Ethically and Responsibly.” She explored the importance of responsible research and innovation, encouraging students to consider the ethical, societal and environmental implications of the technologies they develop. Through interactive discussions, participants reflected on the responsibilities that scientists have towards society and how ethical thinking should be embedded throughout the research process.
Britta Helwig, Intellectual Property Advisor at the Netherlands Patent Office, presented “Understanding Intellectual Property.” Her session introduced students to the fundamentals of intellectual property and patents, explaining how researchers can protect their innovations while contributing to scientific progress. The talk also provided practical insights into navigating intellectual property considerations during an iGEM project and beyond.
Both sessions were highly interactive, with students actively engaging in discussions, asking insightful questions and sharing their own perspectives. Together, the talks provided valuable knowledge that will help participants not only throughout their iGEM journey but also in their future careers as responsible synthetic biologists.
Building Connections Across Teams
The event concluded with an interactive networking and brainstorming session designed to strengthen connections between the participating teams.
During several networking rounds, students rotated between groups, giving everyone the opportunity to meet other teams, discuss their projects, exchange experiences and explore possibilities for future collaboration. The format encouraged conversations across universities, helping participants strengthen their connections within the Dutch synthetic biology community and gain new perspectives that could support the continued development of their projects throughout the iGEM season.
Supporting the Next Generation of Innovators
The Dutch iGEM Meet has become an important annual gathering for aspiring synthetic biologists. By creating a welcoming environment for scientific exchange, discussion and collaboration, the event helps students develop not only stronger research projects but also a broader understanding of the responsibilities that come with scientific innovation.
