Jeffrey M. Beekman is a professor affiliated with the Department of Pediatric Pulmonology and the Regenerative Medicine Center Utrecht. He leads a research group that develops stem cell-based culture and assay technology to model human pulmonary disease, and currently focuses on the (personalized) treatment of cystic fibrosis.
J.M. Beekman obtained a PhD in molecular immunology in 2004 and performed multiple postdocs in molecular and cell biology within various immunological settings. In 2010, he became a principal investigator at the UMC Utrecht and started a novel translational research line focusing on developing novel therapeutic strategies for cystic fibrosis. His team has developed a highly innovative diagnostic assay that enables personalized treatment of CF, showing a first clinical application for 3D organoid technology. He has received various prizes including the 2017 European CF society award, the 2017 European Respiratory Society Excellence Award for Research in Cystic Fibrosis, and the 2017 ‘Willy van Heumen’ prize for alternatives to animal experiments, and 2019 Prix Galien research award.
