Professor Lukas Kapitein, one of the CLT’s founding member and a leading figure in molecular and cellular biophysics at Utrecht University, has been appointed as a new member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). The Academy announced the appointment of seventeen distinguished researchers, including Kapitein, on May 8.

The KNAW membership is a prestigious recognition of scientific excellence in the Netherlands. Members are selected from a broad pool of nominees by expert juries across diverse fields of science and the humanities.

Pioneering Cell Biology and Microscopy Innovation

Professor Kapitein is celebrated for his groundbreaking research into the internal workings of cells, with a particular emphasis on brain cell biology. His laboratory is known for developing advanced imaging technologies that have significantly deepened our understanding of neurological processes. These cutting-edge tools are now widely adopted across the scientific community and the biomedical industry.

Kapitein’s approach combines scientific curiosity with technical innovation. His work continues to shed light on the cellular mechanisms underlying brain function and disease.

Upcoming Installation

Kapitein and the other new KNAW members will be formally installed on 29 September 2025. Their induction underscores a shared dedication to both academic excellence and societal impact.
