Dr. Josiah Passmore

Josiah Passmore is a postdoctoral researcher in the group of Prof. Lukas Kapitein, Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Biophysics at Utrecht University. After graduating with BSc Hons in Biological Science (Molecular and Cellular Biology) from the University of Exeter in United Kingdom, Josiah continued to work on characterisation and modelling of organelle membrane dynamics and interactions for his PhD in the same University. He is particularly interested in the interplay between organelle dynamics and inter-organelle interactions. While organelles are extremely motile and dynamic, they also maintain communication with each other in complex networks, with physical membrane contact sites and extensive signalling pathways.

Within the Center for Living Technologies, Josiah aims to use precise control of intracellular processes with tools such as optogenetics to study organelle dynamics, communication, and interdependence. He is also combining live-cell imaging and optogenetics with super-resolution expansion microscopy or multiplexed immunofluorescence to allow us to assess the impact of cellular perturbations on the intracellular landscape. His research interests are organelle dynamics, organelle communication, membrane contact sites, oxidative stress, optogenetics and super-resolution imaging. Outside the lab, he is usually on the climbing wall or playing board games.
